20-year-old man arrested for apparent attempt to kidnap child in Dublin

A man has been arrested following an apparent attempt to kidnap a two-year-old boy in Dublin city.

The boy was in a stroller outside his home on Sheriff Street in Dublin’s north city center at around 12 noon today when a man, apparently shouting “I want the baby” tried to kidnap him, according to it is understood.

The boy’s mother was about to leave the house with her son when she went back inside to get something and left her son in the stroller in front of the front door. When she returned moments later, it is understood that a man, aged in his 20s, was trying to take her baby.

Neighbors saw the man with the child and intervened.

Gardaí arrested him a short time later.

The man is not believed to have known the boy and the apparent kidnapping attempt appears to be random in nature.

The suspect was reportedly yelling “I want the baby!” as he attempted to remove the child from his stroller at the front door of his home, said Nial Ring, an independent councilor for Dublin’s north inner city.

“The girl was walking out with her baby, she just went back into the house for a second to get her purse, or whatever, and the baby was in the stroller right at the front door,” Ring said.

“When she came out, a guy was in the stroller trying to get the child out. He was very scared. Of course, she became hysterical and another neighbor came and another girl. They grabbed him and the guards came very quickly and arrested him.

“Apparently her man was yelling, ‘Give me the baby! I want the baby!’

“It was a horrible thing that happened. But the best thing about Sheriff Street is the closeness of the community. People look out for each other all the time. Then someone saw something unusual was happening and came to rescue the baby.”

The mother did not know the suspect and no one else at the scene knew him locally, Ring said.
