Man with knife arrested at Watergardens shopping center in Melbourne’s northwest

Brave witnesses fought back to take down a man allegedly brandishing a knife inside the Watergardens shopping center in Taylors Lakes in Melbourne’s northwest on Friday afternoon.

The 30-year-old Sunshine man is alleged to have stolen the knife from a grocery store “before beginning to wave it around on Melton Hwy around 12.50pm,” Victoria Police said.

He allegedly used the gun to assault and threaten a 21-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman inside the shopping center.

With the help of the public, the man was arrested and is now in police custody.

Footage obtained by 7NEWS shows bystanders pinning the man to the ground.

A man who helped make the citizen’s arrest, Jack Hurmez, told 7NEWS, “I took the knife from him and then my cousin came and jumped on him.”

The Victoria Ambulance was also called to the scene, but no treatment or emergency transport was necessary.

Witnesses told 7NEWS the entire shopping center was closed, terrifying shoppers in the wake of the recent Bondi Junction stabbing massacre that claimed six lives.

Another witness, Barbara Pace, told 7NEWS she was shopping at Kmart when the department store informed shoppers: “We are closing the doors.”

“Not knowing why you’re locked up makes you a little scared and you think, ‘what’s going to happen?’

“With what happened in Sydney, we all have to be vigilant now.”

An investigation into the incident is underway and any witnesses are urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
