The collapse of Earth’s magnetic field fueled life 590 million years ago

Earth’s powerful magnetic field protects life on the planet from severe cosmic radiation as we know it. This is what differentiates our blue world from Venus and Mars.

However, the Earth’s magnetic field has not always been stable, causing occasional weakening at various time intervals.

A new study led by researchers at the University of Rochester has discovered a surprising record in which Earth’s magnetic field declined for up to 26 million years, 591 to 565 million years ago.
